Local bodies are considered the backbone of Governance System in any country. While state, provincial or national assemblies are meant for legislation, the local bodies actually are tasked to provide basic amenities to the common people. Unfortunately this concept has not been followed in true letter and spirit in Pakistan and makeshift arrangements are often resorted to.
Local bodies usually get preference under the dictatorships in Pakistan as instead of representative assemblies, they usually try to control masses through local governments. Different mechanism exists in all provinces of Pakistan regarding the functioning of local bodies, however, new Prime Minister Imran khan encourages autonomy for local bodies and the same was practiced during PTI Government in KP.
Basing on the same lines, Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs, Babar Awan announced that government is looking to introduce a new system for Local bodies for Punjab, KP and Islamabad. A separate assembly on the lines of a provincial assembly is also consideration for Islamabad. Moreover, direct selection of mayor for Islamabad is also being suggested.
He added that a host of new reforms are under consideration to improve governance in the country. The provinces of Sindh and Balochistan will also be encouraged to follow suit.
