Rawalpinid: A special court of Anti-Narcotics on July 21, 2018 handed life imprisonment to PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi in Ephedrine quota case, on which he was arrested from the courtroom. Hanif Abbasi says I am not ashamed on court decision and being jailed happily but will appeal against the decision in High Court very soon. Other seven accused in the case giving them the benefit of doubt, at the time of judgment all other accused including Hanif Abbasi were present in the Court. The workers of the PML-N strongly protested against the decision and the Kachahri Chowk was closed for traffic.
The Judge Mohammad Akram Khan acquitted seven other accused in the case giving them the benefit of doubt in Ephedrine quota case. Hanif Abbasi was contesting Elections 2018 against Awami Muslim League Chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed from NA-60 Rawalpindi. Abbasi was sentenced under anti-drug related provisions, trial was held for 6 years and statements of 26 witnesses were recorded during the hearing of Ephedrine Quota Case.
According to the judicial proceedings Hanif Abbasi could not defend himself and the allegations imposed on him proved true. Hanif Abbasi’s lawyer Tanvir Iqbal completed his final arguments in the given deadline before the decision was preserved. The Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi Bench had directed the special court to conduct hearing into the case on daily basis from 16th of this month and decide it by today (Saturday).
Talking with media reporters after arrest, Hanif Abbasi said that I am not disappointed with the decision; I am happily arrested and imprisoned. I am not ashamed of any kind and will challenge decision in High Court. The federal minister had revealed this in response to the question of the Member Assembly on which Chief Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Iftikhar took notice of himself.
