Google is paying homage to fabulous novelist and playwright Fatima Surayya Bajia on her 88th birthday. The search engine is displaying a doodle of the legendary novelist on its homepages. Google Doodle dates back to 1998 and is essentially a temporary modification of the Google logo that honors events, achievements, and people from all over the globe.

This is not the first time that Google is honoring Pakistani artists; before that Google has also paid honor to personalities like Mehdi Hassan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abdul Sattar Edhi, Noor Jehan, Nazia Hassan and some others. Fatima Surayya Bajia was born in Hyderabad in 1930 – now an Indian state. After independence, she migrated to Pakistan along with her family and settled in the metropolitan city of Karachi.

It is worth noting that despite not having the formal schooling, she rose to become a prominent literary figure in the country. She had ample knowledge of Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and literature.

After the death of her father and grandfather, she engaged herself in bringing up her siblings in a motherly fashion and made sure they bore good education and intellect. Almost all of them shaped their own personalities successfully in various fields of art and culture.

Her sister Zehra Nigah is a comparatively well-known poet, while another sister, Zubaida Tariq, who passed away earlier this year, was a cooking expert. Her brother, Anwar Maqsood, is a legendary writer and host who is famous for his satirical writings.

Unfortunately, Fatima Surayya Bajia left this world on 10th February 2016 in Karachi, at the age of 85 due to an ailment of throat cancer. Bajia won numerous awards, including the Pride of Performance Award – one of the highest civil awards – in 1996 for her services to the performing arts in Pakistan. She was also awarded Japan’s highest civil award and also, she has served as an advisor to the Chief Minister of Sindh. In 2012, she was also awarded Hilal-i-Imtiaz by President of Pakistan.

On 22nd May 2012, Bajia’s biography titled Apki Bajia (Your Bajia) was released. The script had been written by Syeda Iffat Hasan Rizvi after almost six years of research.
