Colombo: A brave 2nd biggest bank robbery was reported from Thalawa, Anuradhapura where the thieves had made off with cash and jewelry value 95 million rupees. Police doubtful the theft was carried out on either Saturday or Sunday while the bank was closed. So far this is the biggest bank robbery in Sri Lanka.
According to the Police, thieves had used a gas powered metal cutting device to break into the bank through the back entrance and had cleaned out 3 of the 4 safes at the premises. According to our correspondent in the area, the thieves had been through enough to remove all hardware containing the footage from security cameras.
Police dogs were used in an effort to locate the thieves and the suspected escape route used by the robbers. Officials realized that the bank had been robbed this morning; incidentally, this particular state bank branch is located just 750 meters from the Thalawa Police Station on the Padeniya-Anuradhapura Road.
